Sega-Sammy Returns to Profit in the First 9 Months of Fiscal Year 2016

Sega-Sammy have posted their financial results for the first 9 months of the fiscal year 2016 (ending March 31st). In total, the company achieved net sales of 245 billion yen ($2.09 billion) and posted a profit of 6,498 million yen ($55.5 million). While the total sales were higher for the same period the year before, the company posted a loss back then. To see how the different segments performed, we included the chart below, showing the net sales and operating income for Sega-Sammy’s three main business segments (in millions of yen):

These show the same trend that we’ve seen in Sega-Sammy’s previous financial results. While the Entertainment Contents business (which includes console, PC and mobile gaming) sells more than the other segments, it only barely managed to post a profit. It’s the Pachinko business that remains the most profitable, while the Resort business posted a small loss.

The explanation given for the results for the Entertainment Contents business also echoes those of previous statements. Older titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2, Chain Chronicle and Puyo Puyo!! Quest continue to remain profitable. Newcomer Hortensia Saga is also performing well. On the other hand, The Entertainment Contents business also recorded increased advertising costs and costs related to updates for older titles. They also note that packaged games sales were down compared to the year before, despite the release of Football Manager 2016.

Sega’s forecast for the entire fiscal year 2016, which was revised near the end of last year, remains unchanged. As such, the company expects to post an operating income of 10 billion yen ($85.46 million).
