Phantasy Star has the distinction of being one of Sega’s oldest franchises, predating even Sonic the Hedgehog. Although the franchise has taken a variety of forms since its inception, it exists to this day. Originally Phantasy Star debuted as a story-heavy RPG series on the Sega Mega Drive, but there are other subseries including the action RPG Universe series and the MMORPG Online series. While aesthetics, emphasis on plot and mythology, and gameplay can vary wildly between the games, they do share a focus on science-fiction, fantasy, and the coexistence of magic and technology.
