Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker: Auctions

The Auction system is the method by which players obtain demons in the Devil Survivor games. It’s a feature unlocked fairly early into the game but not immediately available at the beginning. When you go to the Auction menu, you can choose which bargaining class of demons you want to bid for, with more powerful demons becoming available as the story progresses and as higher classes of bargaining are unlocked. The ability setup and level are randomized for the demons. After story events or after completing a Free Battle, the availability of purchasable demons is reshuffled.

Once a desired demon is selected, the player will compete against three other randomized and fictional bidders per each auction. Each demon comes with a starting bid level, and you’ll be able to adjust your bid more than once before the timer winds down. You’ll typically be able to see the bidding range that the bidders are willing to front for the demon, and as the bidding timer winds down, you’ll also be able to gauge their confidence level in winning the bid.

The latter is important because a decrease in confidence generally correlates to lower bidding, While it’s behavior that only represents one bidder, it at least means that there’s one less competitor to seriously worry about. Of course players have the option of putting up a ton of money so that they always secure a desired demon, but this makes it easier for you to run out of money, and the battles you need to earn money don’t pass by all that quickly. You’re not spending the money on anything else, but it’s generally desirable to have more money on hand to buy other demons – there may be an especially good one that comes up in the future. Therefore, reasonable guesses are encouraged so as to minimize your loss and also actually secure the demon. Be warned that on occasion demons will ask for more money even after you successfully bid for them.
