Etrian Mystery Dungeon: English Medic Trailer, North American Website Up

Atlus released their next character class video for this week. The trailer shines a spotlight on the Medic, a specialized healer class and a staple archetype in class-based RPG’s.

The #EMDmysterybox promotion also continues with the Medic video so be sure to share the video on Facebook or Twitter if you want to participate. There’s no mention of the end of the promotion for sharing the Medic video but based on previous videos, it should end early next week.

I’d also like to take the time to draw attention to the recent launching of the North American Etrian Mystery Dungeon website. It’s quite similar to the Japanese Etrian Mystery Dungeon website; even the color scheme viewing options for different classes are left intact. There are some omissions from the Japanese website like some videos, wallpapers (to be added later) and Twitter icons. However, now that all of the content is English elements of the game are more readily understandable, like localized names for the game’s systems and what certain Skills do. It is nevertheless nice to see attention in the form of elements like a website and preorder links through retailers being devoted to this new game.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon: North American Early Print Bonuses, Protector Trailer, Special Atlus Promotion

Pictured above is an early promotional image describing the bonuses found in early North American copies of Etrian Mystery Dungeon. The items include a special outer box cover (similar to Project X Zone’s Limited Edition, for those looking for reference,) a 28-page artbook that also includes information on basic elements of the game like class descriptions, and the “Rough Sketch Ver.” soundtrack CD, which contains six tracks that are “work-in-progress” versions of background music found in Etrian Mystery Dungeon. The final designs of the items are subject to change.

Atlus also released an English trailer for the Protector class, the tanks of the series. Perhaps Atlus will be steadily releasing trailer for each class over time, leading up to the game’s April 7 release? Atlus USA also is offering a special prize (to be announced later) for a randomly chosen fan who shares the Protector trailer on Facebook or Twitter. It’s worth noting that part of the trailer’s title is “10 Weeks of Giveaway Info!” so this program could be an extended affair. If you’d like to participate, be sure to get on it! The video description says that the “first winner” will be chosen next Tuesday, or January 27.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon: US Release Date, Landsknecht Trailer, Early Copy Bonus

Atlus announced an April 7th, 2015 U.S. release date for Etrian Mystery Dungeon during today’s Nintendo Direct. The game will be made available through physical packages and the Nintendo 3DS eShop. First-print copies and preorder copies will also come with a bonus soundtrack CD for the game, though it isn’t entirely clear if the bonus CD will contain the entirety of the game’s soundtrack. There was an English trailer made viewable through today’s Nintendo Direct to promote the game, but it’s actually the same trailer made available during the end of December of last year. It is however, nice to see Atlus and Nintendo promoting the game.

In fact, a while ago AtlusUSA streamed themselves playing the game, a YouTube video of which can be found here.

A trailer for the Landsknecht class was also made available today…in English! The video is not a carbon copy of the Swordsman video produced for Japan. To accompany the trailer, Atlus also provided a description for viewers to check out, alongside a general press release description for the game. Continue reading to check out both.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon: Wanderer and Battle System Videos, Skill Info

Gematsu recently published a new article containing a couple of helpful videos and some information on special skills for the new Wanderer class. The information for the Wanderer class was found on the Wanderer subcategory of the official website’s Character Maker section. If you visit the Character Maker section, you can also check out pages for the nine other announced classes. Each character class’s page allows you to check out color variations by clicking on the number icons found underneath the character art.

To get back to the Wanderer class, the site lists three Representative Skills and one Special Blast Skill. The Wanderer’s Representative Skills include Stone, Hunt, and Tunnel, and the Special Blast Skill for this class is Gust. The descriptions for the skills are below, quoted directly from Gematsu:

Representative Skills

  • Stone – Throws a rock at an enemy within an arc-shaped radius and damages them.
  • Hunt – An attack that affects any enemies in front of the caster; if the enemy is either a bird or animal type, extra damage is inflicted. A weapon is required in order to cast it.
  • Tunnel – Destroys walls up to three spaces away in front of the caster.

Special Blast Skill

  • Gust – Creates a sudden burst of wind that blows enemies around in a given room. It won’t outright defeat them, however.

It isn’t entirely clear what the meaning is between the delineation of the different types of skills. It doesn’t seem like the skill hierarchy is carried over directly from Etrian Odyssey IV, at least; Auto-Resurrect, Knockout Blow and Party Heal are all Representative Skills for the Medic. It appears Etrian Mystery Dungeon will have its own skill hierarchy.

I’d like to add that the official website for the game does feature some interesting additional content; there is a wide variety of Twitter icons featuring color and gender variations for different classes if you go to the Special section of the website.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon Trailers: Second Promo Trailer, Three Class Demos

Gematsu recently compiled a new batch of Etrian Mystery Dungeon trailers. I’ve included them here in this writeup for your viewing, along with a couple of my comments for each video. Please note that the trailers are in Japanese, and there are currently no subtitles for them.

With that said, check them out below! The second promotional trailer is about three minutes long, and the other three videos range from about half of a minute to a minute.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon Infodump: JPN Boxart, Wanderer Class, “DOE” Enemies, NPC’s

This week’s Famitsu is out and with it comes a hefty release of information. Gematsu compiles this new information in a writeup that can be seen here. To begin: above is the boxart for the Japanese version of the game.

EOMDWandererReveal

Next, we have the reveal of a new class type: the Wanderer. Fans of the Shiren the Wanderer franchise may notice some similarities in character design. Coincidentally, Chunsoft developed Shiren the Wanderer for the Wii, and Sega published the game in Japan while Atlus handled publishing in North America. Fellow Segalization writer Kuronoa adds that Sega localized and published the DS title Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for North America, and published a spinoff Shiren the Wanderer game for the Dreamcast in Japan. Anyway, there aren’t any details yet on this class’s battle functions, but those details may perhaps be revealed in a class demo video in the future.

ShirentheWandererFamitsu also introduced two NPC’s this week, though currently unnamed. There is man with a large frame and dark hair who leads the Adventurer’s Guild. You’ll speak to him to edit your party and create new characters. There is also a slender man who can be found at Magan’s House, where players will choose missions and report to after completing them. Gematsu reports that Famitsu says players can also speak to the orange-haired man for “Town Development”, though what that means is currently not fleshed out.

Lastly, Etrian Mystery Dungeon introduces a spin on the notorious DOE enemies with this game’s FOE’s. More info is sure to come in the future.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon Character Class Video Set

Siliconera recently authored an article compiling a set of videos featuring four of character classes for the upcoming Atlus-Spike Chunsoft crossover Etrian Mystery Dungeon. Do note that while the game is going to be localized, the videos themselves are in Japanese. Each demo video is also about half a minute long. Continue reading to check them out!

Atlus recently updated the Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon promotional website with videos showing off some of the core gameplay systems in this crossover title. They play automatically upon visiting the site, with options to toggle audio on or off. These short videos should offer a look at how these two different franchises will blend together. Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon Collaboration Announced!

Atlus announced a crossover between their Etrian Odyssey franchise and the Mystery Dungeon franchise in the same livestream that announced Etrian Odyssey V. Titled “Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon” and developed for the 3DS, the game is a collaboration between Atlus and Spike Chunsoft. The game already has a planned release date of March 5th and will retail for ¥6,980.

Gematsu writes that an announcement trailer for the game describes the crossover as for “those of you who’ve played 1,000 times” and for “those of you who want to play 10,000 times”, perhaps positioning the game as one meant for diehard fans. They have also produced a list of staff working on Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon, information found in the trailer and the newly launched website for the game. I’ll reproduce the table that Gematsu created here:

Atlus (Production)

  • Producer – Sigeo Komori
  • Director – Yukari Yokoro

Spike Chunsoft (Development)

  • Planning and Director – Seiichiro Nagahata
  • Character Design – Kaoru Hasegawa

Etrian Odyssey Series Staff

  • Music – Yuzo Koshiro
  • Class Design Drafter – Yuji Himukai
  • Monster Design – Shin Nagasawa
  • Art Supervisor – Nizou Yamamoto

For our readers who want a little more background on the Mystery Dungeon franchise, my fellow staffer Kuronoa offers some help:

Mystery Dungeon is Chunsoft’s pride and joy, their own interpretation of the “Roguelike” formula. Since 1993 they carefully crafted this style of dungeon crawling and made a name for themselves collaborating with the most respected RPG franchises. The series was originally conceived as a spinoff for Dragon Quest, starring DQIV’s lovable merchant oaf Torneko Taloon. Over time, official variants range from Final Fantasy (Chocobo as the star), to Namco’s The Tower of Druaga, Pokemon and an original story series titled Shiren the Wanderer. The series have also inspired clones such as Izuna on DS, Azure Dreams on Playstation and even variants of series we cover like Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon and Dramatic Dungeon: Sakura Taisen. To best explain the gameplay common with this series, players are sent to randomly generated dungeons full of hidden traps and enemy crowds. The game is turn-based, in which your every move, walking or attacking, counts as a turn and will cause all surrounding units to make a move accordingly. This thus creates a sense of strategy for the player requiring them to take the time to plan out how to get out of the situation. One wrong move could mean you will lose your items and money, or depending on the individual game the worst case scenario will mean resetting your experience level. This is not too much of a setback, you can always find decent item replacements and store everything valuable for later. I’m curious what Etrian Odyssey will bring to the table, especially if the iconic F.O.E. enemies show up because that can be terrifying in this type of gameplay.

Be sure to check out the trailer below! For those looking for a few additional screenshots, this Gematsu article is worth checking out.
