Fan Group Working on English Server PSO2 Project

Talk Amongst Yourselves, a subsection of Kotaku featuring article contributions from Kotaku readers, reports that a fan group is working on a private English server for Phantasy Star Online 2. Titled “Polaris”, the project is produced by only a handful of fans whom have successfully created a private English server with create-a-character and English chat capabilities fully working so far.

The group says that they plan to introduce more features up to producing a fully functional game, and that time is the only real obstacle. They suggest that they hope the project can be allowed to reach full function, but are also okay with Polaris prompting Sega to expedite release of the game in the West. Some team members also say that they are willing to work with Sega on the game’s localization, though apparently neither side has contacted the other directly as of the article’s publishing.

After the article’s initial publication, Sega provide a comment to the article’s author. The comment is reproduced below:

We don’t have a comment on PSO2 in general beyond what we’ve already said before – that the game is delayed and that we’ll update the public when we have any news.

The game originally released in Japan for the PC during the summer of 2012. While Sega has offered comments in the past suggesting that the localization effort for PSO2 in the West has been delayed, there are fans who become unsure of what to think as time progresses without more detailed responses on the status of the game.
