Sega-Sammy Holdings have released their annual report for 2017, where they discuss at length their plans for the future. There’s one particular sectoin from the report that I found rather interesting. The Online Content Divisional HQ’s operations center, among other things responsible for their PC online game area, intends to generate earnings continuously by 2020. A key part of that plan involves their online RPG Phantasy Star Online 2. Specifically, the group aims to execute three main action plans for the series:
In the latest PSO2 Station, SEGA have revealed screenshots and video footage of the characters from Nier: Automata, as they appear in Phantasy Star Online 2. Someone captured the video stream and uploaded it to YouTube, you can that video below. As detailed in an earlier article, the collaboration sees costumes of the Nier: Automata characters 2B, 9S and A2 added to the game, along with hairstyles, accessories, weapon camos, lobby actions, music discs and posters. The Pods from Nier: Automata make an appearance as well. The update is scheduled to be released on March 10 in Japan.
In what is ultimately a surprising move, SIE Japan Studio have ended up releasing a set of free DLC for Gravity Rush 2 in the West, which includes the Phantasy Star Online 2 collaboration content that was previously released in Japan. It’s surprising because Phantasy Star Online 2 still hasn’t been released in the West, despite being announced back in 2012, and it seems unlikely to happen at this point. The good news is that this DLC is free, and Gravity Rush 2 itself is an excellent game that offers a gameplay experience unlike anything else out there. It’s well worth checking out, and a free demo is available on the PlayStation Store.
Sony has released the previously announced “Crazy Kitten” costume DLC for Gravity Rush 2 (Gravity Daze 2 in Japan) in Japan, allowing players to select a new outfit for Kat based on a costume from Phantasy Star Online 2. It also includes new PSO2 based photo items for players to place in the environment. The DLC is apparently still scheduled to be released for the West according to Sony Interactive Entertainment PR Yasuhiro Kitao, but it’s unclear when it will end up being released. The fact that it may end up being released at all is surprising enough, as SEGA still hasn’t released Phantasy Star Online 2 in the West.
Sony has uploaded a trailer for the Gravity Rush 2 DLC to YouTube, you can find that video below.
I lost track of how many collaborations articles related to SEGA of Japan’s games we’ve posted here already, but it appears these events have been rather successful for SEGA as they’ve just announced another collaboration event for Phantasy Star Online 2. After Gravity Rush 2 earlier on, it’s now time for NieR: Automata to get a collaboration with SEGA’s online RPG.
We previously talked about the Gravity Rush 2 costumes that were being added to Phantasy Star Online 2, and now Sony has revealed the Phantasy Star Online 2 content that will be included in Gravity Rush 2. First of all, Gravity Rush 2‘s main character Kat will be able to wear the “Crazy Kitten” costume (as shown in the featured image of this article). We also included an image below of the original costume as it appeared in Phantasy Star Online 2.
Every year, Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan and Asia conducts an award ceremony that honors games of particular commercial success released on PlayStation. Last year, Phantasy Star Online 2 and Yakuza 5 received distinction.
This year’s winners have been announced, and SEGA games are well-represented!
Phantasy Star Online 2‘s next update, scheduled for December 21, includes a new AC Scratch called “Phantom & School Life” as part of the Persona 5 collaboration event that was announced some time ago. It includes outfits for the Persona 5 Protagonist, Ann Takamaki, Makoto Niijima, Futaba Sakura, and Joker, in-game Persona 5 posters, music, a Persona Summoning Lobby Action and an Arsène Figure Room Item.
A short trailer for the Phantasy Star Online 2 and Gravity Daze 2 collaboration has recently been shown during a Gravity Daze 2 promotional video). Starting from November 11, both Kat and Raven costumes, hairstyles and accessories will be available in Phantasy Star Online 2, along with lobby actions that show off Kat’s signature Gravity Slide move and Raven’s flight ability. It also includes an in-game Gravity Daze 2 poster decoration. You can view the new content in the trailer below. Unfortunately, Phantasy Star Online 2 remains unavailable in the West despite the fact that a localized version was officially announced over four years ago, which still hasn’t been officially cancelled. That said, an English fan translation of the Japanese version is available.
Sega-Sammy have released a revised forecast for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017 (from April 1, 2016 to September 30, 2016). While they expect lower net sales compared to their previous forecast, the contrary is true for their operating income. In particular, they expect to reach an operating income of 14,000 million yen (around $139 million), more than double the initial forecast of 6,500 million yen (around $64.5 million). Sega-Sammy attributes these results to several factors, which we discuss in more detail below.
