SEGA’s “Liberation of the Blue Sky” Turns Out to be a Mobile RPG

SEGA recently registered a trademark for “Soukuu no Liberation” (‘Liberation of the Blue Sky’), which had people speculating about what game the title could be referring to. SEGA has now officially revealed the game, and it turns out to be a new mobile RPG for iOS and Android. This probably won’t be too much of a surprise, given how SEGA has been churning out a lot of mobile games over the past years. The story involves the hero “Loran” as he attempts to lead an army to retake the Imperial city from an invading force. He signs a contract with Queen Rivera from the Underworld (who appears to be another major character in the game) which gives Loran access to a power to crystallize monsters.

What’s perhaps more interesting is the fact that the game will be a 2D action RPG, as most of SEGA’s mobile RPG’s are grid-based tactical RPG’s. You move the character by swiping the screen, and select different skills by touching the icons at the bottom right of the screen. Another focus of the game will apparently be aerial combo’s, where you launch enemies in the air with a combination of attacks. Five professions will be available, each offering different skill-sets to use in battle.

In addition, the game will feature multi-player, as up to four players can team up to complete quests. There’s also a lobby where you can chat with party-members before heading into battle.

A number of side characters have been revealed as well. Here’s the artwork of some of the people helping Loran in his quest:

And here are the bad guys:

Liberation of the Blue Sky Main VisualLiberation of the Blue Sky is scheduled to be released in Japan this winter, and the pre-registration is already available on the game’s official website. Whether or not this game will ever make it overseas will remain to be seen. As it stands, few of SEGA’s mobile RPG’s have been localized. Which is a shame, as SEGA’s recent efforts do look a good deal better than the vast majority of games available for mobile right now. One thing’s for certain though: the graphical quality and gameplay of mobile games are evolving rapidly, and SEGA intends to be on the forefront of the high-end mobile games market.
