Song Selection Screen

In the Rhythm Game section, you get a selection of songs to pick from. and each has a number next to its name indicating the difficulty level (Easy, Normal, Hard, Extreme, Extra Extreme). Clearing Hard mode is required to unlock Extreme and Extra Extreme, and not all songs will offer all of the five difficulty levels. In the bottom right corner more information about the song is displayed, such as the number of characters it features, and information about the artist.

Gameplay

Project DIVA Future Tone 20160608 - 9As with previous Project DIVA games, the core aspect of the game is the rhythm game. After selecting a song, a music video will start playing, and you’ll notice various melody icons (representing directional arrow inputs or buttons on the gamepad) floating on the screen towards a “target icon”. When the melody icon overlaps the target icon, you need to press the melody icon’s corresponding button or arrow key. Getting the timing right is essential, as this will increase the gauge on the bottom of screen, which needs to be filled to a certain point before the song finishes in order to successfully  “clear” the song.

Practice Mode

Project DIVA Future Tone is the first game in the Project DIVA series to feature a Practice mode that allows you to play specific sections of a song that you’re having difficulty with. So if one particular part of a song is your weak point, you can now focus on training just that part alone, rather than having to play through the entire song each time. A welcome addition to the game for both newcomers and veterans!

Photography

Aside from the regular PS4 SHARE functionality, the game will offer a photography mode where you can watch the music videos featured in the game. Taking a screenshot is done by pressing the triangle button on the PS4 controller while viewing a video, and this screenshot can then be used as a background in the game’s loading screen, or viewed in the PlayStation 4’s Capture Gallery.

Project DIVA Future Tone will be released on the PlayStation Store in Japan on June 23. At this point there’s been no news on a potential localization of the game for the West.
