Shenmue 3 Gets Five New Screenshots at Magic Monaco

Y Suzuki gave a presentation today at the Monaco Anime Game International Conferences, talking about the Shenmue franchise and showing a bit more of Shenmue 3. In particular, five new screenshots have been revealed, showing some of the environments and lighting effects in the game. We included them below! Shenmue 3 Dojo has also been reporting live from the conference on their Twitter account, sharing more information and a few videos as well.

Shenmue 3 is scheduled to be released on the PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017. There’s also an on-going slacker backer campaign where you can back the game.

Shenmue 3’s New Website Could Use Some Optimizations

The latest Shenmue 3 update reveals a completely redesigned website, but people quickly reported problems trying to view it. While one may expect that this was due to the amount of people visiting it, that’s not actually the main reason. In fact, the website just hasn’t been properly optimized. I’m pointing this out in the hopes that someone working on the website can make the necessary changes to address some of the main issues. As we’ve seen with the initial reveal, a major news update that draws a lot of traffic could lead to the server being unable to manage all the incoming requests. Below, I’ll go into more detail on the exact issues with the website. The following explanation may get a bit technical at times!

Shenmue 3 Update: PayPal Backers Won’t Receive Kickstarter-Exclusive Rewards (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Ys Net have responded to a question from one of their backers, explaining why they made this decision. You can read it here.

The latest Shenmue 3 update delivers the results of a recent poll, where backers were asked whether or not the Kickstarter-exclusive rewards should in fact remain exclusive, or should also be given to those backing the Slacker Backer campaign via PayPal. Around 31% of the backers answered “Yes”, while 27% voted “No”. The rest of the 15,110 people who voted answered “either way is fine with me”. While this means that almost three out of four people who voted had no objection to making the exclusive Kickstarter rewards available for PayPal backers, Ys Net decided not to make the rewards available to PayPal backers due to the strong response from people voting No.

Shenmue 3 Update: New Rewards Poll, Extended Slacker Backer Campaign, and More

A new Shenmue 3 Kickstarter update includes a couple of updates from the Shenmue 3 team. First off all, they announced a redo for the Rewards Poll. Instead of using Twitter, they’ll now be sending a link to Kickstarter backers where they can answer the poll’s question. In particular, Kickstarter backers are asked whether or not the on-going Slacker Backer Paypal campaign should give also people access to the currently Kickstarter-exclusive rewards.

One example of such a reward is the $80 Kickstarter reward which includes “an international phone card (in-game item) to call Nozomi, Guizhang Chen, Ine-san, Joy, Fuku-san, or other characters from Shenmue 1 & 2”. Back when the Kickstarter was launched, I was disappointed to see that this reward in particular was locked behind a pay-wall. Even if it’s not essential for the story, I feel that this kind of throwback to the original games is something that should be available for everyone. While making the rewards available for slacker backers doesn’t really make that happen, at least more people will be able to get access to these and other rewards. Also worth noting is that the Paypal campaign still doesn’t offer a PC version of the game, so hopefully it will still be included for the Slacker Backer campaign as well.

Shenmue 3 Update Features Progress Report and New Screenshots

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page has received a new update, explaining what the team has been up to over the past three months, and showing a few new screenshots. The game’s story and scenarios are out of the planning stage, and the team is currently working on map testing. This involves making decisions about how big a particular area needs to be. The development team is said to be in high spirits, with some people even working on Saturdays at times. You can take a look at the screenshots here (note that these are early screenshots, featuring character models and areas that will all be reworked later on):

Creator of Shenmue HD Fan Project Joins Shenmue 3 Development Team

The man behind the Shenmue HD fan project, known as Noconkid (or Kid Nocon), has now joined the Shenmue 3 development team. Noconkid is a 3D graphics designer from South Korea, and had been working on a Shenmue HD fan project for several years now. Running on the Unreal Engine 3 and later 4, the quality of his work and attention to detail had impressed many, including Yu Suzuki himself. Interestingly, this is the second time Yu Suzuki has hired a fan to work on Shenmue 3.

Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Ends With a Record-Breaking $6.33 Million

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter has concluded, and has now set the record of most funded video game on Kickstarter on a whopping $6,333,295 million, contributed by almost 70,000 backers. This means the total funding amount is more than triple the original $2 million goal of the Kickstarter. It’s a remarkably achievement, especially if you consider that this is the sequel to a game that was released more than ten years ago. On top of that, in North America Shenmue 2 wasn’t even released on the Dreamcast, and fans had to import the EU version or wait for the Xbox port of the game to continue the story.

Shenmue 3 Is Now the Most Funded Video Game on Kickstarter Ever

With only a few hours left until the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter ends, it has now beaten the previous record of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to become the most funded video game on Kickstarter ever. At the moment the total funding amount has exceeded $5,800,000. With around 6 hours to go, it may yet have a chance of reaching the $6 million target. The Kickstarter has now has also added a new $39 reward, which aside from the digital version of the game also included exclusive wallpapers, and a mention of your name on the official website. Given the fact that Yu Suzuki would have liked to reach $10 million, there’s probably a good chance that they’ll continue funding through PayPal after the Kickstarter ends, although as of yet this hasn’t been confirmed by Ys Net.

A Twitch stream will take place in the final hours of the Kickstarter campaign, which you can watch here. Let’s hope Awesome Japan will deliver a more professional presentation this time around, so that the Kickstarter can end on a high note!

Shenmue 3 Lake of the Latnern Bugs

Shenmue III: Lake of the Lantern Bugs Trailer, KS Ending in Less than Three Days

YsNet uploaded a short, new trailer to promote Shenmue III to the official Shenmue III YouTube account ahead of the Kickstarter‘s impending closure. We’re now at just three days left (read: <3….or </3) to donate – if you haven’t already done so and want to contribute, be sure to stop by the Kickstarter page! The physical PS4 copy is now an option at the $60 tier, an update that was made quite a while ago. Be assured that the Kickstarter will certainly hit $5 million, in my opinion. At this point, it’s about if you want to contribute or not, and how much you want to contribute! Do note that electing to contribute will allow backers to offer opinions when Ys Net solicits them during the development process.

The trailer itself shows Ryo and Shenhua at a night scene. Ryo, while catching up to Shenhua, notices a firefly, and as he approaches the lake he witnesses a mass gathering of light around Shenhua. It’s the presence of a mass gathering fireflies, and it also serves to highlight the lighting work in-game and offers another work-in-progress look at the character models, to which Yu Suzuki is paying particular attention. Shenmue 3 Physical PS4 Copy Confirmed, Awesome Japan Issues Apology

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page received a new update today, announcing a new PS4 physical copy reward. Those who pledge $60 or more will have the option to choose between a digital or physical copy of the game for either the PC or PS4. Before, only the PC version had an option for a physical copy. This has been one of the top requests from fans, so it’s good to see the option is finally there. Other new rewards have been added as well, though the high cost will probably put them out of reach for the majority of people.

In the same update Awesome Japan, the company managing the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter, has also posted an apology for the recent Twitch stream with Yu Suzuki. The Twitch stream in question suffered from bad audio and video quality, and the presentation itself left a lot to be desired. The company had this to say:

We offer our sincerest apologies for last week’s Twitch broadcast and any trouble it may have caused. This apology comes late, and we accept full responsibility. We promise we will do everything we can to help bring Shenmue back. We ask for your forgiveness and the opportunity to make amends. – from all of us at Awesome Japan

Pledges for the Shenmue Kickstarter had been going relatively slow over the past week, but the new rewards have given it a considerable boost, pushing the total pledge amount over $4,000,000. It’s also probably not a coincidence that this update went live just when the Shenmue fans had organized their recent Tweetathon on the 3rd of the month. In fact, Awesome Japan had called on its backers to join the Tweetathon. Additionally, the fans had also launched a new initiative to boost pledges by asking people to add $30 more to their initial pledge today.
