SEGA’s Hortensia Saga Launches in Japan

SEGA’s new tactical RPG Hortensia Saga has been released today on iOS and Android in Japan. The free-to-play game is somewhat of a successor to Chain Chronicles and features very similar gameplay. No doubt, Sega will be hoping that Hortensia Saga will reach the same success as Chain Chronicles, which was (and remains) a big hit for Sega in Japan. Compared to Chain Chronicles, Hortensia Saga is graphically certainly more impressive, as the characters on the battlefield are more detailed and the artwork seems more consistent.

In battle, your team is placed on a 3×3 grid, just like that of your opponent. Positioning characters correctly and making use of different attacks that can hit multiple grids, is key to winning the battle. Aside from the story mode, the game also features PvP where two camps of 20 players fight for victory. Whether or not the micro-transactions are balanced and the game doesn’t end up being “pay-to-win” will probably become clear over time. Below you can find the three trailers that have been released for the game so far, and a few screenshots showing the 3×3 grid and the 20vs20 mode.

Sega Closes Doors on Valkyria Chronicles Duel

Sega and NHN’s Japan-only free-to-play mobile and browser game Valkyria Chronicles Duel, which launched in July 2012, is scheduled to end operation on April 22. Unlike its predecessors, the game was essentially a card-battle game without an actual storyline. The goal was primarily to collect cards of the characters featured in the three original Valkyria Chronicles games and to use those cards to build a squad, which you then pit against your opponent’s squad in an effort to take control over their territory. The fight was then visualized in a short 3D battle scene. There was also a limited base-management aspect to the game where you could build and upgrade facilities.

Chain Chronicle Released for the US on iOS and Android

As of today one of Sega’s most successful mobile games in Japan, Chain Chronicle, has been made available for the US on iOS and Android. Gumi seems to be handling everything regarding the English version of the game, and although it’s still a Sega game, they don’t seem to be involved with (or promoting) the launch of the game. I gave the game a try, and so far the experience has been rather positive. I haven’t been bugged with popups for in-app purchases (that are sadly very prominent in other Sega mobile games) yet, although I’ve only completed the tutorial at this point.

Chain Chronicle Confirmed for US Release on December 8

The game Chain Chronicle might not ring a bell for most Sega fans outside of Japan, but in Sega’s homeland the game has been one of their most successful F2P mobile titles. The title earned Sega over $72 million USD in the nine months following its release, driving Sega to put more focus on their Sega Network division and their F2P mobile games. For the English version of the game, Sega Networks has partnered with Gumi Asia, who will be handling localization and continued development of the English version of the game.
