Blade Arcus Misty

New Blade Arcus from Shining EX Character – Misty, (Hearts, Blade)

Blade Arcus from Shining EX, the second iteration of Blade Arcus fighting games featuring modern Shining characters, continues to expand its roster with the announcement of Misty from Shining Hearts and Shining Blade. As of now, the roster stands at 16 playable characters. Shining Resonance‘s Sonia will be available to those who purchase a first-print edition of Blade Arcus from Shining EX.

Blade Arcus from Shining EX will be playable at Tokyo Game Show 2015. The build of the game that will be playable here will include Misty as a playable character, too.

A special trailer devoted solely to the character is available for viewing after the break. It’s a surprisingly lengthy four minutes! The trailer is a demo of Misty’s battle capabilities. She’s a character who primarily focuses on screen control through placement of special orbs. She can hit them with an attack to send them in a direction, or remotely explode them.

The video toys with some interesting ideas, including summoning two orbs and then sending one orb to attack while forcing the other to explode, forcing the opponent to block. If she knocks her opponent down, she has an opportunity to summon orbs, but the payoff doesn’t seem especially great even if your opponent blocks since she has to recover. You might at best be able to simply summon more. It might be best not to send the orbs off immediately, but at least have one nearby you in order to control space as it becomes necessary and to keep your opponent guessing.

New Yakuza TGS2015

Sega’s TGS 2015 Lineup – New Yakuza Game, and More Surprise Announcements?

Sega’s Tokyo Game Show 2015 plans are becoming clearer as the big weekend approaches. The official Yakuza portal has a curious image at the top of the page, the one we’ve chosen as this article’s featured image. It’s certainly a teaser for a new Yakuza title, set to be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2015. So much for my prediction….anyway, congratulations Yakuza fans! September 15 is also the day of the Sony Japan’s press conference, so we can probably expect a full reveal of new title there.

Sega had also gone live with an update to their website detailing this year’s TGS offerings from itself, Atlus, and its partners for this year (Warner Bros., Nippon Ichi Software, Mages). The officially announced list featuring Atlus and Sega (and including their status as playable and/or stage presence only) is as follows:

Project DIVA X and More Hatsune Miku News From Magical Mirai 2015

The recent Magical Mirai 2015 event had a playable demo of Project DIVA X available, which allowed the fans to gain a bit more insight in the game’s new features. The random module drops during Chance Time we talked about in an earlier article happen while the song is being played, and not only that, but the characters can actually switch to the new module instantly while the songs is still playing. In the older Project DIVA games, modules were obtained only after the song was finished (either as a reward for meeting certain conditions, or by purchasing them with in-game Diva points). Interestingly, NeoGAF user ATXAlchemy mentioned getting a module drop even when he/she failed the Chance Time.

The Link Scratches from Project DIVA F 2nd apparently weren’t in the demo (although the regular Scratch Notes were). Link Scratches were a controversial addition to F 2nd since they required players to play the song at least once to memorize their rhythm, something which the veterans of the series disliked as it often ruined their attempts to Perfect a song on their first try. It remains to be seen whether or not Sega will be bringing them back in Project DIVA X.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition Announced for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita in Japan

In a somewhat surprising move, Sega of Japan has announced that Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition will be coming to the PS4, PS3, and PS Vita on December 17 in Japan. The game is an updated version of the original Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax featuring new characters and balance updates, which we talked about in some of our earlier articles.

The original game is still set to be released in the US and the EU about a month from now. One can question if revealing the existence of an updated version on more platforms is a good move from Sega. After all, this could make people think twice about buying the original game, and I’m already reading comments from people doing just that. Let’s hope this doesn’t hurt its sales too much, as a potential localization of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition is evidently going to depend on how well Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax sells overseas. We added three images, posted by Dengeki Online, of what we assume is the console version of Ignition below.

Project DIVA X Introduces Quest Mode and Rush Notes

The latest Famitsu has revealed a bit more info on Sega’s recently announced Project DIVA X. Aside from the Free Play mode where you play the regular rhythm game, the game will now also feature a new Quest Mode. In this Mode, you will be able to take up quests from five different areas. Clearing these quests is done by raising your “Voltage”, which is visible in the first and only screenshot of the in-game UI below. Apparently completing these quests will “fill” the area they originated from, and Miku and the other Vocaloids will grow stronger as a result. In this mode, you’ll also get conversations between the characters after completing certain quests. Judging from this information, it seems like the Quest Mode may bring a bit of an RPG element to the franchise.

It’s Been 3 Years Since the Last Update on the Official PSO2 Facebook Page…

It’s now September 2nd, 2015 when I’m writing this article, and that means it’s been exactly 3 years since we last received an update on the official English PSO2 Facebook page. At the time, it was the last day of PAX, where people could play a demo for the English version of PSO2. There’s actually a bit of a history behind the official Facebook page, since it was initially managed by Sega of Japan. The first few updates were all in Japanese, but the staff working on the page soon noticed they were getting visits from people all over the world, and not just Japan. The staff made an attempt to translate their messages in English, and said they’d like to make the game available worldwide. Given their comments, it wasn’t actually all that surprising to see the game was eventually announced for the West.

On July 10, 2012, the Facebook page was transferred to Sega of America. In the last update from the Japanese staff, they said they were surprised to see how many people outside of Japan liked the page. At the time, the page had accumulated 14.299 likes. Unfortunately, the follow-up posts from Sega of America wouldn’t last long. While PSO2 grew into one of Sega’s biggest games in Japan, the English website and Facebook page stopped posting updates altogether. At the moment, over 100.000 people liked the page. A number that I find surprising, given the fact that the game was never released and the fact that the page seem to have been abandoned by Sega. The only activity on the page comes from the fans asking Sega for an update.

Over the past three years, Sega has been very quiet about the status of the game. A year ago, Sega posted this message, in response to a tweet from a user lamenting the lack of updates on the Facebook page.

The game is still delayed. SEGA is currently working on bringing PSO2 to the West and will update as soon as we know more.

We’re now a year later, and unfortunately there’s still no word on what’s going on with the game’s localization. Worse, a Sega representative stated there are no plans to localize the upcoming PS4 version. While that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, as it’s not uncommon for such statements to be made even when the company does in fact have plans to localize the game, it only hurts Sega’s image even more. Sega’s new CEO, Haruki Satomi, said he wants Sega to “become a brand again”. But amidst what seems to be an attempt of Sega to renew their image, PSO2 is the elephant in the room. If they want to regain their credibility, a good way to start is to finally talk to their fans again. I’m sure they’d be surprised at how many people still want to play this game.

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA X Announced for PS Vita and PS4!

Sega has announced the next Project DIVA game called Project DIVA X for the PS Vita and PS4! The game will be released on March 2016 for the PS Vita and in Fall 2016 for PS4 in Japan. You can visit the official website for the game here. Given the success of the recent Project DIVA F games and the fact that the game is being released on PS4, there should be a good chance that the game will be localized. It should also be interesting to see how the developers will handle the difference in performance between the PS Vita and the PS4. Perhaps the fact that they’re not aiming for a simultaneous release may have something to do with this. Personally, I hope that the game will finally support 60fps on the PS4. No Plans to Localize Phantasy Star Online 2 for PS4

It has come to our attention that our partner site SEGAbits noticed a Kotaku writeup regarding localization plans for the Playstation 4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2. That is to say, there aren’t any plans for localization at the moment. Per Jason Schreier of Kotaku and his conversation with the Sega representative:

SEGA is currently not planning to release the PS4 version of Phantasy Star Online 2 outside of Japan

There’s a lot to be said for being upfront on the localization status of the game. There’s a lot to be said for the fact that “currently” is an important word in reading the above statement. Things can change, and Sega might not necessarily respond well (or at all) to what they deem to be unsavory fan conduct.

There’s also a lot to be said for the idea that this stretches beyond what could reasonably be appreciated as “tolerable” for any gamer waiting to play PSO2. It’s a shame. This is exactly the sort of move that does not do well for fan goodwill.

If the idea is being held somewhere that Phantasy Star Online 2 is fundamentally an untenable investment for the West (and to speak not on the company’s behalf, because so far as we know this has not been explicitly or implicitly suggested,) maybe all parties involved should seriously ask themselves why this is believed to be the case, and equally important – how this is to be rectified. Phantasy Star Online 2’s continued lack of localization is an enduring reference point in fans taking issue with Sega in recent times. As a new Sega fan and someone who does consider himself outside of the range of highly knowledgeable Sega fans who voraciously study the company’s history, I can still say that the move isn’t going to be well met in any sense of the phrase.

Take a Look at the Japanese Boxart for Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir

Atlus updated the official website for Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (an HD remake of the original Odin Sphere) with a post showing the game’s official boxart, created by director George Kamitani. On top of that, they also showed the cover for the game’s 64 pages hardcover art book, which will be made available with preorders of the game. Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is scheduled for a January 2016 release in Japan on PS Vita, PS3 and PS4, and later in 2016 in the Americas. You can find the new artwork below!

Phantasy Star Online 2 Coming to PS4 in Japan, Episode 4 Also Announced

Sega has made several Phantasy Star Online 2 announcements on a recent NicoNico livestream today, one of them announcing that Phantasy Star Online 2 will be heading to the PlayStation 4 in 2016, alongside a new Episode 4: Reborn expansion. Sega also announced that the PS4 version of the game will be playable at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (September 2015).

Unfortunately there’s still no word on the status of the release of PSO2 for the West. While officially still delayed, many have lost hope in ever seeing the game released outside of Asia. However, the announcement of the PS4 version may be good news for us. After all, Sega’s CEO noted that, while the position of the PS4 still isn’t that strong in Japan, it’s registering record-breaking sales elsewhere. Since Sega sees an opportunity there, it would only make sense that they release Phantasy Star Online 2 worldwide. Let’s hope they see it the same way!
